Horse stables have a growing problem with manure because the EU Landfill Directive requires a phase out of the disposal of biodegradable waste in landfills. Fortum has developed a service concept that offers stables a new, convenient solution that combines horse stables, power plants and a manure service.
The horse stables are using by-products (like sawdust) for bedding. The horse manure at the stables is mixed with the bedding, and then collected and incinerated at a power plant. The service that is currently on trial in Finland includes delivery of the bedding to the stables and pick-up of the manure/bedding mixture.
The energy content of the manure produced by the about 77,000 horses in Finland is approximately 500 GWh. In other terms, three horses can “produce” energy that is enough to meet the annual heating needs of one single-family home.
