District heating warms homes and buildings reliably every day. Many buildings also generate heat that previously went entirely to waste. For example, the machines and equipment in stores, data centres and hospitals generate huge amounts of heat. Through our open district heating network, our customers can sell us the surplus heat generated in their operations. These solutions significantly reduce district heat emissions, as the recovered heat is used instead of, for example, fossil fuels.
We are currently utilising for example the waste heat generated at data centres in Espoo, Finland, and Stockholm, Sweden. In Finland, a total of about 20 gigawatt hours of thermal energy is recovered annually from Tieto and Elisa data centres; it is equivalent to the annual thermal energy consumption of about 1,000 single-family homes.
